Located in both Comal and Guadalupe counties, New Braunfels, Texas is bordered by San Marcos, Lockhart, Luling, Seguin, Schertz, Timberwood Park and Canyon Lake. New Braunfels is the county seat of Comal County. As of 2007, the estimated population of New Braunfels, Texas was 51,804 with residents falling under the 830 area code and zip codes 78130 through 78133.
Carl of Solms-Braunfels, a German Prince, established New Braunfels, Texas in 1845. He named the community after his hometown of Braunfels, Germany. German settlers began arriving in New Braunfels in 1844 with a second wave of German settlers arriving in 1846. Three disasters struck the German settlers around this time—the most serious being an outbreak of cholera that killed several hundred people. However, the city not only recovered, but thrived. By 1850, New Braunfels had grown to be the fourth largest city in Texas with only Houston, San Antonio and Galveston having a larger population. The current local newspaper, the Herald-Zeitung, was founded in 1852 under the name Zeitung.
Today area school-age children attend either one of the three private schools, schools within the New Braunfels Independent School System or Comal Independent School District.
