The Colony, Texas
Located in Denton County, The Colony, Texas counts Frisco, Allen, Plano, Lewisville, Highland Village and Little Elm among its closest neighbors. The 5-Star Athletic Complex was completed in 2003 and is likely responsible in large part for The Colony being named the Sports Town of the United States by Sports Illustrated that same year. Fox and Jacobs Developers founded The Colony, Texas in 1973 with the intention to model the new city in a colony setting with groups of single family homes. Since another town used the name “Colony,” “The” was added to the name. A municipality district was formed to service the new city with water, electricity, cable television and telephone service. However, the city didn’t officially incorporate until just a few decades ago. In 1977, four years after the first resident moved to The Colony, a vote was held by residents who wanted to remove the community from the extra-territorial jurisdiction of neighboring Frisco.
