Located twenty-eight miles southwest of Austin and forty-six miles northeast of San Antonio, Wimberley is a popular vacation destination for many residents of both cities as well as surrounding communities. With a population estimated at 3,797 as per the 2000 census, Wimberley is a quiet and quiet town known for its artistic spirit and many popular annual events. Residents receive mail under the 79746 zip code and fall under the 512 area code.
Situated on Farm Road 12 fourteen miles northwest of San Marcos in Hays County, Wimberley was settled under the name Winter's Mill after William Carvin Winters built a gristmill on Cypress Creek in 1856. Nancy Winters Cude renamed the settlement Cude's Mill after she purchased the gristmill in 1864. The mill again changed hands and the settlement again changed names in 1874 when Pleasant Wimberley purchased it. The selling price is reported to have been an amount of gold worth $8,000.
Alfred Von Stein, postmaster for nearby San Marcos, applied for a post office to serve what had become the town of Wimberley's Mill although for the application, he used the name Wimberleyville and recommended Robert Moore be installed as postmaster. The application was granted, but the name was to be shortened to Wimberley. It was from there that Wimberley truly began to grow into the city it is today.
