Taylor, Texas

Located seventeen miles east of Round Rock and twenty-nine miles northeast of Austin, Taylor is a beautiful city situated at the intersection of State Highway 95 and U.S. Highway 79 in Williamson County, Texas. Taylor residents are serviced by zip code 76574 and area code 512.

Officially settled as Taylorsville in 1876 to prepare for the arrival of the International-Great Northern Railroad, the Texas Land Company began auctioning off lots in the area and thus established the town. In 1892, Taylorville was renamed Taylor as it has been known ever since. The city received its name following the tradition of naming railway stops after officials for the railroad, which in this case was Edward Moses Taylor.

Taylor was established in large part by Czechoslovakian, German and Austrian settlers and made Taylor their home. Before long, Taylor was a busy hub for shipping cattle, cotton and grain. A fire in 1879 destroyed twenty-nine of Taylor's thirty-two local businesses but the town recovered. Businesses were rebuilt and in many cases, rebuilt on a larger scale. Machine shops and a roundhouse were built in 1882 to service the two new railroads, the Taylor, Bastrop and Houston railroads, that began running through the town around the same time.

Today, Taylor continues to be a thriving city in the center of Texas with a rich and diverse cultural background. Historic preservation has been important to Taylor with a museum, historical markers and a library archive adding to the city's allure.
