Founded officially in 1896, the Village of Steger, IL really formed around John Valentine Steger's piano factory in 1893. Had it not been for John Valentine Steger's donation of $400 in election costs, the village would likely now be called Columbia Heights instead of baring his name. Steger Pianos remained a part of the Village of Steger until 1926. The village was considered by many to be the piano capital of the world thanks to Steger Pianos that produced over one hundred pianos each day. The village incorporated in 1896 and was home to 324 residents at that time.
