Located nine miles southeast of Marble Falls in Burnet County, Spicewood was established in the late 1800s with its first post office opening its doors in 1899. James B. Pangle was named post master of this office which eventually came to serve Spicewood's neighboring towns as well. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were not kind to many small towns and Spicewood's neighbors were no different. In the touch times, Spicewood came to be a sort of center point for the struggling towns to go about their community business.
In 1908, the first small Baptist Church was established in Spicewood and in 1919; Spicewood's name became the official name of the local school district, replacing Rockvale.
The prosperous times continued for Spicewood with many small local businesses opening and more residents moving to the area. By the late 1920s, Spicewood had an impressive, for the time at least, population of roughly 100. That number grew to 125 by 1933.
In the 1940s, Spicewood businesses profited significantly when Highway 71, or Farm Road 93 as it was known then, ran through the town bringing with it more traffic and therefore, more business for local stores and businesses.
Today, Spicewood remains unincorporated. The local post office is still in service with the 78669 zip code. Residents fall under the 512 area code like many of the other small communities in the area.
