Among its closest neighboring villages and towns are Lynwood, Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, South Chicago Heights, Steger and Crete in Illinois as well as Dyer, Indiana.

The land that now houses Sauk Village, IL was once inhabited by Native Americans and is believed to have been used as a settlement for hundreds of years. Used by Native Americans for transporting items for trade and transporting herd animals, they were eventually forced to move due to westward expansion in the 1800s. Every year, however, they would still travel the Sauk Trail to collect treaty money from the United States and Canada.

American settlers began moving into what would become Sauk Village, Illinois in 1838. Many of the settlers that took residence in Sauk Village were of French, German or Western European decent but moved to the village from the East Coast of America. From there, the village grew into the village it is today.
