A 2005 census estimate for the population of Manor, located in Travis County and part of the metropolitan area of Austin-Round Rock, put the number of residents at almost 1,900. Within the five short years since that estimate, the number is thought to have risen to 5,500. Although this estimate is based on utility hookups and not actual census numbers, it gives a pretty clear indication that Manor is a quickly growing city.
Manor was named for its original postmaster and one of the very first settlers in Travis County, James Manor. It was Manor that would construct a home on the land that would become the City of Manor. He built his home on the east bank of Gilleland Creek where he had settled in 1836. James Manor's home was followed by a second home, built by E.D. Townes, on the opposite bank not long after. James Manor went on to add a two story frame to his log cabin in 1842 which would act as not only the first stage stop from Austin, but in 1857 also became Manor's post office.
James Manor continued his contribution to the town that bore his name in 1858 when a school for girls was built on land he donated to ensure his daughters would receive a good education. The school for girls followed the construction of a school for boys that was built in 1854.
Today, Manor has been immortalized thanks to the film What's Eating Gilbert Grape which was filmed in Manor. During filming, a young actor would celebrate his eighteenth birthday in Manor. That actor went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for his performance in the movie. Although he didn't win, his role of the autistic boy in What's Eating Gilbert Grape is often referred to as one of Leonardo Di Caprio's best performances.
