Luling, Texas was founded in 1874 as a railroad town where cattle drivers following the Chisholm Trail often stopped. Luling was often called the toughest town and Texas because of the rowdy cowboys that were frequent visitors to the town who paid little attention to the law.
In 1922, Edgar B. Davis found oil in Luling, TX after having mortgaged everything he owned to finance his drilling operation. This discovery opened an oil field that was twelve miles long and two miles wide. Because of this discovery, the focus of Luling, TX as a city shifted from farming to oil which would remain a big part of Luling's economy for sixty years.
Although no one can say for sure how Luling, Texas got its name there are several popular theories. It is generally accepted that the city was named for a railroad builder's wife although there are come that believe it was named after a Chinese railroad worker.
