Located in the area known as Chicago Southland, Hazel Crest, Illinois is a village in Cook County that is bordered by Markham, Harvey, East Hazel Crest, Homewood, Flossmoor and Country Club Hills. The majority of Hazel Crest lies within Bremen Township with a portion of the village in Rich Township. As of the 2000 census, the population of Hazel Crest, IL was estimated to be 14,816 with all of its residents falling under the 60429 zip code and the 708 area code.
Much of the success and growth experienced by Hazel Crest in its beginning days can be credited to newspaper editor and Hazel Crest resident, William McClintok. McClintok moved to the area in 1890 after buying 80 acres of land from Fred Puhrman, a farmer that resided in Hazel Crest. McClintok wanted to have the local milk train stop in the area to service residents so he built a depot. This move greatly increased the transport opportunities for the burgeoning town. This depot eventually housed a Sunday School room, a day school, the post office and even the town's first real estate office.
Today, Hazel Crest, Illinois is still home to family members of the very first settlers of the area who continue to be involved with the community in the tradition of their ancestors.
