Garland, Texas
Located in Dallas and Collin Counties, Garland, Texas is bordered by Plano, Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Dallas, Mesquite, Rowlett and Rockwall. At the time of the 2000 census, the population of Garland, TX was 218,768 but the current population is thought to be much higher. Residents are served by zip codes 75040 through 75049 and area codes 214 and 972.
Garland, Texas grew out of a dispute between two towns, Embree and Duck Creek, over which town had rights to house the local post office. Although this was in actuality the dispute that would cause the towns to merge, it was merely the latest in a long standing rivalry between the two communities. Dallas County Judge Thomas A. Nash came up with a solution he hoped would satisfy the feuding towns – move the post office between both towns. This was done in 1887 with the help of Congressman Joe Abbott who was visiting the area. The new city came to be known as Garland; named after Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland. Garland, TX was officially incorporated in 1891.
Today, Garland, TX is still powered by the same municipal electric provider, Garland Power and Light, that was formed after an electrical generator plant was financed by a businessman that lived in the area in 1920.
