Del Valle, Texas

Located in Travis County on the Colorado River, Del Valle is roughly seven miles southeast of Austin, Texas. The estimated population is estimated to be at close to 3,000 and it boasts a healthy 158 businesses – a number that is growing all the time.

Santiago Del Valle was given a land grant by the Mexican government in 1836 and the land he settled on is what would become Del Valle. It began as a farming town with grain and cotton being the primary crops grown and produced on its farms. A post office was added to Del Valle in 1878 with postmaster William Givens and by the 1880s Del Valle offered its fifty residents the services of a school, a general store, three churches and employment in a steam gristmill and two cotton gins.

Although hit hard by the Great Depression when the town saw its population drop to 25 in the early 1930s from an estimated 150 in 1927, Del Valle recovered and even thrived. The survival of Del Valle may be able to be attributed to the formation of Del Valle Army Air Field, which would later become Bergstrom Air Force Base, in 1942. Support services that had previously been absent moved into Del Valle with the new airfield and with those services came an increase in population.
