    One of the four suburbs that compose the Best Southwest area of Texas, De Soto is located in Dallas County and is bordered by Dallas to the north and north, Lancaster to the east, Glen Heights to the south, and Cedar Hill and Duncanville to the west. According to the 2000 census, De Soto, Texas had a population of 36,646. The population grew to an estimated 45,514 by 2005.

    De Soto, TX is one of the oldest communities in North Texas, settled for the first time in 1847. The city is named for a doctor who was dedicated to serving his community; Dr. Thomas Hernando De Soto Stewart. The first post office opened to residents of De Soto in 1881. The city continued to grow and thrive with a general store and a cotton gin in operation by 1885. Although the population dropped to 50 residents from 120, the town recovered, reporting a population of 97 in 1930 with several local businesses operating in the area.

    Today, De Soto, TX has continued to grow and is now the largest city in southwest Dallas County. It was recognized in 2006 as an 'All-American City' – a great honor for and city in the United States.
