Originally founded by German settlers in the 1830s but the town wasn't officially established until 1853. With the rapid expansion of railways in the late 19th century, Tinley Park, IL grew accordingly thanks to its position on Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad line. Tinley Park was known as Bremen until 1890 when it was decided the name should be changed to honor Samuel Tinley; the first railroad station agent in the village. When the village was incorporated, the official incorporation ceremony was held at the train depot in 1892.
Today, Tinley Park, Illinois is focused on restoring its historic downtown district. Residents are encouraged to maintain the look of the historic village by creating facades for building that are less than thirty years old. Many of the original buildings in the area have been recreated in the area to preserve the historic feel of the village.
