The City of The Colony, Texas officially incorporated in 1977 after a vote was held by residents who wanted to remove the community from the extra-territorial jurisdiction of neighboring Fresco. The definitive article was used as part of the name because 'Colony' was already in use. Eastvale, a small lakeside community that bordered The Colony was merged with The Colony in 1987. The new community retained the name The Colony, Texas.

The Colony, TX was founded in 1969 by developers Fox and Jacobs as a new city to be modeled after Dallas. The idea was to have a group of single family homes gathered in a colony setting. A municipality district was formed to service the new city with water, electricity, cable television and telephone service. The Colony, TX is situated on the land surrounding State Highway 121 and Farm to Market Road 423.
