The new development was to be a self-governing community located in Chicago's south suburbs and focus on being a residential area for veterans returning from World War II. Elbert Peets designed the village with many of the nation's other planned communities in mind. It aimed to be a place for the middle class in the tradition of many other suburb communities that had been moving away from being exclusively for the upper class.
Park Forest Plaza opened in 1949 in Park Forest, IL and is regarded as one of the first major shopping centers in the United States. It would be Park Forest's downtown area for much of its early life. It offered more than fifty stores in its outdoor shopping mall and included stores like Marshall Fields, Goldblatt's and Sears. Although the mall closed in 1996 for good, it was long considered to be a focal point of the village.
