Oak Forest, Illinois
With a population of 28,051 as of the 2000 consensus, the current population of Oak Forest, Illinois is thought to be much higher. Located twenty-four miles southwest of Chicago in the heart of Cook County, Oak Forest, IL is home to St. Damien's Catholic Church which has one of the largest Catholic congregations in Cook County. Oak Forest also boasts what is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the world, Bachelor's Grove Cemetery. Residents of Oak Forest are served by the 60452 zip code and the 708 area code and counts Country Club Hills, Markham, Crestwood, Tinley Park, Midlothian and Orland Park among its closest neighboring towns.
Originally settled as Cooper's Grove in the early 19th century by Mr. Cooper who is believed to have been the first settler to reside in Bremen Township where Oak Forest, Illinois is located. Mr. Cooper built the first log cabin on the burgeoning town's land in the 1830s.
German settlers began arriving to farm the land of what would become Oak Forest in the mid to late 1840s. Mail service to the area began in 1848. Soon after, the population of the community began to drop as residents moved to areas that offered better opportunities economically with many of them setting up homes in Tinley Park which was situated along railroad tracks.
Although its not known exactly when the community that had been known as Cooper's Grove became known as Oak Forest, but the earliest reference to a community by that name is in a timetable for Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway dated 1893. Oak Forest, Illinois was first incorporated as a village in 1947 but in 1971 it was incorporated as the City of Oak Forest, Illinois.
