Incorporate in 1946, New Lenox, Illinois is located in Will County with Frankfort, Mokena, Fairmont, Joliet, Rockwood and Preston Heights as its closest neighbors. The population estimate as of 2005 was 23,197 up from 17,771 in 2000. Residents fall under two area codes – 815 and 779 – but share zip code 60451. New Lenox offers residents and travelers a stop on the Metra, which services Chicago suburbs, with its main station located on the corner of Cedar Road and U.S. Route 30. New Lenox also has a station designated for Metra's South West Service.

Will County was created in 1852 and what had been known as Van Horne Point became New Lenox Township although the area had first been settled in the late 1820s. The development of this new township can be credited in large part to the Rock Island Railroad that ran between Chicago and Rock Island. The supervisor for this railway, John Van Duser, named New Lenox Township after his hometown, Lenox. The name New Lenox Township became official in 1863.

The Village of New Lenox, Illinois was not officially founded until 1946 when it became incorporated. Carlton Cole and Walter Baers recognized the potential for growth in New Lenox, IL and put the idea of incorporation to a vote and residents voted to incorporate. New Lenox, IL was officially recognized as an organized village by the State of Illinois the same year.
