    Leander, Texas

    Located roughly twenty-two miles northwest of Austin in both Williamson and Travis counties, Leander is quickly proving itself as one of the fastest growing cities in Texas. Its estimated population according to the 2000 census was a respectable 7,596 but in eight years, that number jumped to 25,424. The area code 512 is used by all Leander residents but zip codes are split into 78641 and 78646.

    It is believed the area now occupied by Leander has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. Evidence found via various archeological digs indicates settlements that are believed to date back 9,000 years with the most compelling artifact uncovered in 1983. Leanderthal Lady, as she was named as homage to the city she was found in, is one of the oldest intact human skeletons to date. It is estimated she is between 10,000 to 13,000 years old. Further exploration of that site uncovered evidence that the area has inhabited since at least 5,000 BC.

    Thomas Hornsby is credited with building the first log cabin in Leander in the mid 1940s. It was around this cabin that Leander would begin to take shape. Later John Shaffer would build the first store in Leander which also housed the first post office.
