Kyle was founded in 1881 and its location was chosen for its closeness to the International-Great Northern Railroad line. It was founded by Captain Fergus Kyle whom it was also named for. In the 1940s, Kyle bore the distinction of being the only town in Texas to have an entirely female government.
The former Kyle home of Pulitzer Prize winning author, Katherine Anne Porter, has become a writer's residence which is available to the public by appointment. Porter lived in Kyle from 1892 to 1901 and set many of her famous works in and around the town. Many award winning writers have been hosted by the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center where they have performed readings from works they have done.
