It is not only Illinois' fastest growing city, but is also counted among the fastest growing cities in the United States. Joliet was first planned in the early part of the 1830s to be included as part of Cook County but became the county seat of Wills County in 1836.

As of 2008, Joliet, Illinois boasted a population of an impressive 152,812 residents. That number was a significant increase of the 2000 census population estimate of 106,221. There are eight zip codes that cover Joliet 60403, 60404, 60431, 60432, 60433, 60434, 60435 and 60436. Joliet also employs two area codes for its residents 815 and 779.

The first cabin built in Joliet, IL, was built on the west side of the Des Plains River by Charles Reed in 1833. James B. Campbell planned a village to be called 'Juliet' on the other side of the river. It was a name that had been used by early settlers to the area before Campbell arrived. Originally, Joliet was incorporated under the name Juliet in 1837 but residents had that incorporation rescinded due to tax expenses that they could no longer afford following the Great Depression. The city was reincorporated under the name Joliet in 1852.
