    Located seven miles east of Round Rock and twenty-two miles northeast of Austin in Williamson County, Hutto is considered to be one of the fastest growing cities in the United States thanks in large part to Highway 130's toll road project. With a population in the 1,000s in 2000, the number exploded to nearly 14,000 people within city limits alone.     Hutto was not officially established until the International-Great Northern Railroad established a stop on land that was owned by James Emory Hutto in 1876. The stop was named for him, as was the town that sprang up around the stop. Hutto left in 1885 and moved to Waco where he got into the hardware business. Hutto soon became the destination for many ranchers and farmers from Sweden and Germany who were looking to start their new lives in America.

    The hippopotamus has long been the mascot of Hutto schools with the earliest appearance of this particular mascot being in 1923. Although the origin for that mascot has never been proven, the popular story is that a hippopotamus escaped from a circus railcar prompting much hysteria from the circus workers and much amusement for observers. Whether or not that is the real story, no one knows for sure, but it makes for a great legend.
