    Located on the Calumet Shoreline, Homewood is a village in Cook County, Illinois that, as of the 2000 census had a population of 19,543. Bordered by East Hazel Crest, Holbrook, Flossmoor, and Hazel Crest, Homewood, Illinois lies in Rich Township and residents fall under two zip codes – 60422 and 60430.

    The first European settlers arrived in Homewood in the 1830s along the Vincennes Trail. When Homewood was platted in 1853, it was named Hartford after the man who platted it, James Hart. When the Illinois Central Railroad ran a rail line through Hartford the village name was changed to Thornton Station. The name changed to Homewood soon after, a change that was recognized by the United States Post Office Department in 1869 with the town officially incorporating in 1893. By that time, a number of local businesses had sprung up in the town – saloons, general stores and a blacksmith.

    Today, Homewood, IL is considered to be one of the best southern Chicago suburbs and can boast a population of more than 19,000 residents. The majority of this growth came following World War II thanks to new businesses and new housing subdivisions. Many of these new additions to the landscape appeared quickly and by 1970, Homewood had over 18,000 residents.
