The first permanent residents of Hammond, IN were German settlers looking for land to farm to start a new life outside of Europe. They chose to settle on the land between Grand Calumet River and Little Calumet River in 1847. Until the arrival of these German settlers, the land had primarily been a crossroads used by stage coach and supply lines as well as Native American tribes and explorers. The first real sign of industrialization came with the G.H. Hammond Company packing house in 1869. More farmers arrived after the point as did various merchants and local businesses. Hammond, IN reached its all time peak population in 1960 when the population reached 111,698 residents.
