Lying in three separate counties – Dallas, Ellis and Tarrant – Grand Prairie, Texas is part of the Mid-Cities region of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Grand Prairie, TX is a suburb of both Fort Worth and Texas with its residents falling under the 75050 through 75054 zip codes and the 972, 214 and 469 area codes. As of 2006, Grand Prairie had an estimated population of 153,812 and it is bordered by Hurst, Euless, Irving, Dallas, Duncanville and Arlington.
First established by Alexander McRae Dechman in 1836, Grand Prairie, TX began its life as Dechman; a name it kept until confusion with the postal service caused the town to change its name to Grand Prairie in 1877. It wasn't the first name confusion for the town from the postal service that year. Earlier in the same year, the first United States Post Office opened with the name Deckman as opposed to Dechman because of confusion in the paperwork. The confusion that sparked the name change, however, was between the U.S. Postal service and the T&P Railroad. The railroad had designated the community Grand Prairie based on maps from 1850 through to 1858 that referred to the area between Dallas and Fort Worth "the grand prairie of Texas". To remedy the situation, the post office, and thus the town, was renamed Grand Prairie.
