The City of Carrollton, Texas is divided among three separate counties; Denton County, Dallas County and Collin County. At the time of the 2005 census, the population of the city was believed to be 122,699 with residents being served by area code 972 and the 75006, 75007, 75008 and 75010 zip codes. Carrollton, Texas is bordered by The Colony to the north, Plano, Dallas and Addison to the east, Farmers Branch to the south and Lewisville, Coppell and Irving to the west. Carrollton is roughly eighteen miles from Dallas and is considered a suburb of the city.

In 2006, Relocate America listed Carrollton, TX among the one hundred best places to live in America. In the same year, Money Magazine named Carrollton, TX the nineteenth best place to live in the United States. Carrollton found itself on the same list two years later, in 2008, but had moved up to number fifteen.

First settled in 1842 by William and Mary Larner, many English settlers moved into the area and it is believed Carrollton, TX was named for the hometown of many of these settlers; Carrollton, Illinois. In the beginning, Carrollton, TX was a farming town with agriculture providing the sole livelihood of Carrollton's residents but that changed in 1878 when the Dallas-Wichita Railroad was constructed. The focus of the town slowly began to shift to more industrial ventures and that industrial significance was further established when Jay Gould extended the railroad to Denton in 1880. With a population of 150 residents the industries in Carrollton, Texas swelled to include flour mills, cotton gins, a school and two churches by 1885.
