Calumet City, Illinois, located in Cook County was founded in 1892 under the name West Hammond after Schrumville Village and Sobieski Park merged to form one town. It was named West Hammond due to its location next to Hammond Indiana on the west side of the border between Illinois and Indiana. The town's name was officially changed to Calumet City in 1924.
Sometimes referred to as Cal City, Wild Cal and for a while, the original American Sin City and the Las Vegas of the North, Calumet City, IL built quite a reputation in the early 1920s as a place of debauchery. While it had previously been known as a patriotic city with many of its settlers enlisting to fight the Central Powers; 1919 found Calumet City turning into a haven for bootleggers. Local authorities turned a blind eye to speakeasies and related trades following the onset of prohibition and eventually the area became populated with illegal nightclubs; especially along State Street. This area became known as 'The Strip.
These illegal nightclubs came into control of Chicago's organized crime syndicate including Al Capone when they converted into lawful saloons, clubs and taverns following the return of legal liquor in 1933. This seedy underside of the city continued until the 1980s when many of the bars were closed thanks to successful reformist efforts.
Today, Calumet City, IL is a thriving city with a much healthier reputation. Bordered by Burnham, Chicago, Lansing, South Holland and Dolton, Calumet City residents fall under the 60409 zip code and the 708 area code.
