Boerne, Texas; A Brief History...
Located in Texas' scenic Hill Country, Boerne, TX is the county seat of Kendall County and lies thirty miles northwest of San Antonio. Boerne, Texas is bordered by Fair Oaks Ranch, Scenic Oaks, Bandera, Medina, Kerrville and Comfort and had a population of 10,283 according to a 2008 United States Bureau estimate. Boerne, TX residents receive mail under the 78006 zip code and students attend schools in the Boerne Independent School District. Two major highways run through Boerne – Interstate Highway 10 and U.S. Highway 87. Boerne, TX is also considered part of the San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area which is the third largest metropolitan area in Texas.
The first settlers on the site of what would one day become Boerne, Texas were German colonists that arrived in 1849. These settlers set up their camp on the north side of Cibolo River with the site lying only a mile from where Boerne, Texas is today. This new settlement was originally named after the hometown of these settlers, Tusculum. The name changed to Boerne in 1852; named for author and publicist Ludwig Boerne. The townsite for Boerne, Texas was laid out by Gustav Theissen and John James.
In 1856, August Staffell became postmaster of the first post office in Boerne, TX. When Kendall County was established in 1862, Boerne was chosen as county seat even though Boerne only had ten houses in the community at the time. Boerne, TX received its first courthouse in 1870. That same courthouse became the second oldest courthouse in Texas when it was still in operation although it closed its doors for good in the 1990s.
