Bastrop, Texas, Some History

With the distinction of being the most historic small town in Texas thanks to its 131 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Bastrop is a quaint and cozy town located roughly thirty miles southeast of Austin in Bastrop County. Bastrop is accessible from U.S. Highway 290 and State Highways 21, 71, 95 and 304 with Willamson County, Lee County, Fayette County, Caldwell County and Travis County as its closest neighbors.

Bastrop is a small city that is quickly growing, with a population estimated at 7,823 in 2007. The population over all has almost doubled since the 1970s. Bastrop was originally founded in 1836 and named for Philip Hendrik Nering Bogel – or Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop as he had come to be known. Bogel was wanted in his home country of the Netherlands for embezzlement, but settled in what was to become the city that would bare his name. It was Bogel that would help Stephen F. Austin get land grants from Texas to develop Bastrop. Austin would become land commissioner for Bastrop.

Although Bastrop was briefly renamed Mina after Francisco Javier Mina in 1834, the name was changed back to Bastrop when it was incorporated under Texas law in 1837. Because of a fire that destroyed most of downtown Bastrop in 1862, most of the buildings post date the Civil War and most of those buildings still stand to this day.
